I have slept next to the pond under the shade of a jamun tree on the hottest of days. I have been on calls sorting relationships sitting under a gulmohar tree. I have lounged on the grass and written letters to lovers, and posted them with stained grass.

I have hidden behind bushes and wept. I have walked the road in the middle at 03:00 am and had chaai with the police in their van. I have snoozed on the sandstone slabs on wintry afternoons.

I have eaten ice-creams on Sunday evenings with people i do not know for company. I have walked these paths and streets at all times of day. I have enjoyed an open green space in the middle of a city that has nothing like it.

Now, Rajpath is called Central Vista. For good reason too as Rajpath as it was is no more. The trees are gone. The ponds may be too. For it is being ‘redeveloped’.

I have no pictures of Rajpath and of India Gate. All i have are memories.
